On October 4, 2024, the Ateneo Center for Environment and Sustainability (ACES) was honored to join the Interact Club of Ateneo de Zamboanga Senior High School in a meaningful mangrove planting activity at the Simariki Island, Talon-Talon, Zamboanga City.

Together with fellow participants from the Liga de Ciencia and the Eureka STEM Academic Organization, the group successfully planted 200 mangrove propagules, which is a vital step toward coastal restoration and climate resilience.

The activity was made even more insightful with a short discussion and planting orientation led by Ms. Famela Jane Monopolio, Forest Technician 1 of CENRO, who highlighted the ecological importance of mangroves and shared proper planting techniques to ensure their survival and growth.

This initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by enhancing coastal resilience against climate impacts, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by protecting marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial coastal resources. While it resonates deeply with the spirit of Laudato Si’, answering the call to care for our common home through collective action.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Interact Club for the kind invitation, to Ms. Famela Jane Monopolio for her inspiring and informative session, and to the welcoming community of Simariki Island for hosting this meaningful activity. Our appreciation also goes to all the student organizations and volunteers who took part in this green movement.
