Commencement Exercises of the University of Regina Carmeli Speech (URC) last 16 March 2008, Malolos, Bulacan

The Investiture Ceremony will consist of the Presentation of the University Charter by Commission on Higher Education Commissioner Hadja Luningning Umar, Presentation of the University Mace by Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat, and Presentation of the Medallion by the Superior of the Philippine Jesuit Province, Fr. Daniel Patrick L. Huang, SJ.

Atty. Arsenio L. Gonzalez, Chairman of the University Board of Trustees, will give the welcome remarks while Mr. Hezekiah A. Conception, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, will be Master of Ceremonies.

Church, State, and Civil Society in Postauthoritarian Philippines: Narratives of Engaged Citizenship

Citizenship building is a crucial element in strengthening democratisation. The Church potentially is a crucial actor in this enterprise particularly in places where it exercises profound influence in society. This essay reviews and examines the experience of the Diocese of Malaybalay, a local church in the Philippines. Three arguments are proposed in this paper. First, church ad intra (hierarchical-laity interaction) expands internal participation within the Church and strengthens its capacity as a democratic actor. Second, church ad extra (the Church’s engagement with civil society organisations) enlarges the scope of participation, making alliance building with other democratic actors possible. Third, citizenship formation is a crucial contribution of the Diocese of Malaybalay in democratisation, but it needs to sustain and make it more effective. Read more
