AdZU Comm Alumnus bags international film awards

“The recognition is a constant reminder for me as a [Atenean] filmmaker, that every show and film we produce [is] for the welfare of the children– [upholding] values formation and child protection… and this is what I’ve learned from the Ateneo, the virtue of serving God and Country.” – Direk Charlie Villanueva

Charlie Villanueva, BA Communications alumnus class of ’96 and director of Zamboanga City film “Offside,” snagged the grand prize in the 3rd Southeast Asia Video Festival for Children (SEAVFC) Amateur Category held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last November 29 to 30.

The film, set in the mangrove area in Barangay Taluksangay, documents the life story of a young boy who found happiness in playing football amidst the harsh conditions of life.

The film also bagged the kid’s Choice Award and the Heart Award during the festival.

Working with Villanueva on this film are fellow Ateneans Father Elmer Sumile (AdZU Alumnus HS class 1993) as executive producer, Norman Mayonila (AdZU Alumnus HS 1987) as the Assistant Director, and Glenn Marco San Agustin as the director of photography.

Offside is set to compete in the Prix Junesse Video Competition in Germany next year.
