Beacon Brings Home the Bacon

The Beacon Publications, the official student publication of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University tertiary department  wrapped up a successful first semester for this school year by bringing home several awards and distinctions from various competitions.


Back-to-back win in major confabs

Beacon Newsmagazine bagged the 2nd place for Best in Editorial Cartoon category during the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc’s (OSSEI) National Training Workshop on Campus Journalism held in Baguio City last September 22-24,2016. It also won 4th place Over-All and 3rd place for Best in Layout for Collaborative Publishing categories and placed 7th for Lead Writing in English during the 10th Annual National Media Conference sponsored by the Student Press Advisers Movement, Inc (SPAMI) held on October 26-28, 2016 in Naga City. The SPAM confab was participated in by campus publications in elementary, secondary and tertiary levels from all over the Philippines while OSSEI was exclusive to tertiary publications from all over the Philippines. Both events had an estimated attendance of 600 participants.

Success in telling other people’s stories

Meanwhile, two of the publications' writers made a mark in the first ever One DTI Services Week Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Feature Story contest sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry held October 7-11, 2016 in Zamboanga City. The Best Feature Story Contest is one of the activities set by DTI whose primary goal is to increase the awareness of the public, particularly of the entrepreneurs on the various assistance that can be availed from DTI. With the theme Negosyo, Konsyumer, At Iba Pa,” It also aims to feature success stories of MSMEs registered under DTI.

In this event, Dave U Cervas, current Feature Editor bested all other writers from Region 9 with his article entitled; "Diary of the First Zamboanga City Dairy.” It narrated the hardships experienced by Nonito J Bernardo to operate a dairy farm in a location where large sardines factories are well-established, it also featured the workers whose lives were greatly benefited by the dairy farm, and the help of DTI in making the dairy farm possible.

In the same event, Hasmina A Alfad Associate Feature Editor made it to the finals with her article “Hope for the Disabled.” Her feature story circulated around the lives of the disabled men and women working for the Area for Vocational Recreation Center and showed how they work using their elbows, knees, or feet and that despite having disabilities, they were able to find their place in the world.
