Latest News List AdZU conquers int’l research grounds

Three faculty of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University raised the bar in research by going international on their respective research presentations: Dr Robin A Delos Reyes, Chair of the Languages Department of the School of Liberal Arts; Ma Christina Agdeppa-Cañones, Chair of the Social Sciences Department, School of Liberal Arts; and Marco Alfino Miranda, Director of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Center for Culture and the Arts.

The three presented their outputs in academic writing in the fields of Language, History, and the Arts, in pursuit of greater excellence in the field of research.

Language

Dr De Los Reyes, presented his paper titled, “ELTL Using Chabacano in Elementary Classrooms in Southern Philippines” as language experts convened in Singapore last March 13-15, 2017 for the 52nd Regional Language Center (RELC) International Conference on Dimensions of Language Education: Policy, Perspectives, Practice at the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Language Center (SEAMEO).

De Los Reyes, presented his paper along with several research presenters from all over the world. The conference featured other invited speakers from various countries like Vietnam, United States of America, New Zealand, Hongkong, Austria, Japan, and Singapore. 

History

In the field of History, Cañones presented her paper, "The Ghost of Bro Lou and the Lost Bells: Projections of the Japanese Image in Sites of Memory” in Hawaii for the 28th Annual School of the Pacific and Asian Studies Graduate Student conference last March 22-24, 2017.

The conference was held at the Center for Korean Studies University of Hawaii at Mãnoa. Prior to the conference, her paper was also nominated Outstanding Graduate Thesis in the Social Sciences from the Ateneo de Manila University.

Arts

The only research presenter from the Philippines, Miranda presented his paper at the International Theatre for Young Audience Research Network (ITYARN) Conference in Cape Town, South Africa last May 16-27, 2017.  His paper entitled, “The Praxis of Theatre for Social Change as Hope for the Internally-Displaced and Out-of-School Youth of Zamboanga City: The Case Study of the SUGPAT Alternative School for Peacebuilding and the Arts of Ateneo de Zamboanga University” documented the journey of the flagship program of Ateneo Center for Culture and the Arts-the SUGPAT Alternative School for Peacebuilding and the Arts.

Miranda’s participation in the conference has given the SUGPAT program international exposure and has opened opportunities for international collaboration.  The practice of SUGPAT added to the growing body of knowledge and practices of Theatre for Young Audience in Asia and the world.

De Los Reyes’, Cañones’, and Miranda’s participation in these conferences were made possible through the Research Incentive Grant for International Paper Presentation of the Ateneo Research Center.
