Experience the Extraordinary. Ateneo’s Asia Mindanaw Vol 4 out now.

A most insightful and compelling book, Asia Mindanaw: Dialogue on Peace and Development, takes you to an extraordinary journey through the rich history of Mindanao, the Land of Promise. Now on its fourth issue, this peer-reviewed Journal of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) views Mindanao “as a locus on intersecting ideas and interests, of crisscrossing spaces and movements, whether recent or ancient,” providing an introspective into the great history and culture of Mindanao.

Asia Mindanaw Vol 4’s cover unveils records of Chinese legacies scattered across Zamboanga City streets and barangays, a theme thoroughly explored in “The Chinos were everywhere: Mapping and Locating the Chinese in Zamboanga,” one of the studies featured in the book.

With contributions from local academics with a fervid interest for everything Mindanao, this Journal is made even more interesting as it disseminates breakthrough information on Mindanao’s rich and diverse historic, cultural, and artistic heritage. It features Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU)’s Maria Christina Cañones’ “The Chinos were everywhere: Mapping and Locating the Chinese in Zamboanga, 1850-1898” which relates the significant contributions this ingenious and durable group of migrants have made to the commercial, religious, and socio-political vitality of Zamboanga City. Francis Jumala of the Western Mindanao State University, illustrates a profound insight – the good that is brought about by displacement, which in this case, has strengthened the Tausugs’ adaptability, ingenuity, and amenability. Another AdZU work is that of Sandra Jamiro which entrances you with her account on the historical and artistic works by artists renowned in many places elsewhere but are surprisingly hardly recognizable by fellow Zamboangueños outside the local artists’ circle.

More than just recent historical breakthroughs, the Journal also provides insightful reviews on a variety of books and invaluable transcripts on the current issues and past events present within the region. One such instance would be on the message of AdZU Father President Karel San Juan, SJ, on the burning of the Brebeuf gym, as the Ateneo community commemorated its two-year anniversary last July.

“Kawman Sama-Badjao with Sea Butterflies” by Rameer A. Tawasil, a multi-awarded painter and peace advocate, illustrates native fisherfolk life. Explore the masterpieces of talented Zamboanga artists as Asia Mindanaw features the stories behind their art in “Encounters with Zamboanga’s Masters of the Visual Arts”.

Truly, this 4th issue allows one to experience a side of Mindanao never embarked upon before as it contains a little something for everyone – for all the Chinoys, for our ethnic tribes, for our local artists, and those who shared in the loss of the University and support its move to Rise to challenges brought about by the fire.

To commemorate the two-year anniversary of Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Beloved Brebeuf (1949-2016) Gym that went out with a big bang in a final, awesome blaze of glory, Asia Mindanaw Vol 4 encapsulates the loving sentiments of Ateneans in the transcriptions of AdZU president Fr Karel San Juan, SJ’s homily and message during the Solidarity Mass held the day after the conflagration - as tribute to the oldest and most beloved building in the AdZU Campus.
