RE : VICE PRESIDENT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

I am happy to announce to the
community the appointment of
FR
MARCOS LOUIS D CATALÁN JR, SJ
as Vice President for Higher Education. As such, he shall have primary
leadership responsibilities in planning, implementing and coordinating academic
programs and activities of the higher education schools and colleges.

He holds a doctorate in
Philosophy (2009) from the Universidad Pontificia Comillasin in Spain and a
master’s degree in Theology from Ateneo de Manila University (1998). He
graduated from De la Salle University with two bachelor’s degrees, one in
Philosophy and another in Commerce- major in Accounting (1987).

Fr Louie is not altogether
new to the community as he served as Head of the Religion Department of the
(then) AdZU High School unit from 1992-1994 and also taught English and
Filipino Literature and Grammar, and Religion subjects. Among his
administrative/work experiences were the following: Treasurer of Loyola House
of Studies (1996-98); Assistant Parish Priest in Olutanga, ZDS (1998-99); and,
Secretary to the Provincial and Assistant Treasurer of the Philippine Province
of the Society of Jesus (1999-2001).  His
assignments prior to joining the AdZU community included serving as Minister
(Administrator) of the Loyola House of Studies and as Pre-Divinity Program Coordinator;
the most recent one being the Administrator of Jesuit Health and Wellness
Center at Ateneo de Manila University.

As Fr Louie shall be
available to assume office in the second semester of school year
2017-2018,
DR EVELYN G CHAVEZ is, thus, designated as Officer-in-Charge (OIC). I thank Dr Chavez for her willingness and
generosity to serve as OIC-VP for Higher Education in the meantime.

I also take this opportunity
to express my deepest gratitude to
DR
REBECCA V FERNANDEZ
for her dedicated service and leadership as Academic Vice
President for thirteen years (2004-2017).
She has led the tertiary and graduate units through major transitions
and challenges with intelligence, integrity and intrepidness which yielded
significant gains for the University not only in terms of academic excellence
but also in the professional growth of emerging leaders. I am grateful to her,
too, making herself available to play an even greater role in the service of
the University’s mission as a member of the Board of Trustees and as Assistant
to the President for Quality Assurance and Leadership Development.

Lastly, I thank Fr Louie Catalan for joining
us to help steer our University towards its mission of education and social
transformation as the Jesuit University in Western Mindanao and beyond.
